I can’t draw today…certainly not as I’d like. I can’t do the things I love about the United States of America justice.
Seriously. This is not one of my better cartooning days — how could I hope to even come close to expressing how I feel about Raiders of the Lost Ark? Or Golden Age Looney Tunes cartoons? Or any song Chuck Berry ever wrote? At its best, I think the USA knows more than anyone how to have fun.
I do think we’re not as good as some other countries at making speeches, and I ain’t exactly a top-ranking Yankee orator myself, so please pardon what follows.
We’ve made monumental strides in tolerance over the past century, which I guess is pretty quick for a nation that hasn’t got a single millennium under its belt. But MAN, we’ve still got a long way to go. It frustrates me to see people near and dear to me suffer injustice for their gender, race, creed, sexual orientation, income, genetic defects, or whatever you got… because they’re great people and they’re my favorite things about the USA. I would not feel half as worthy of living without having these people as friends. And yes, I’m going to keep calling it “the USA” for the remainder of this post, because it’s got good rhythm and is harder to slur into “Uh-murricuh.”
Yet, in spite of all that prejudice, I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Too much gleefully hedonistic culture and too many great people to leave behind. God bless the USA and everyone in it.
P.S. Stay safe. Don’t be a jerk with fireworks.
